Bike blogs have been around almost as long as blogging itself, but the recent growth in bicycle usage here in the United States made me curious about just how widespread the phenomena was. A couple weeks back I started a little project of finding two blogs for every state in the Union. For most states that was relatively easy, especially because there is a definite blog clustering effect within various biking communities. Once one cyclist starts a blog it's common for at least a few more of their cycling friends and acquaintances to start bike blogs of their own. There were a few states that were tough, but I'll leave figuring those out as an exercise to the reader.
I didn't have a completely set criteria for the bike blogs I chose beyond only two per state, but I did favor those that update regularly when I could. I tried to mix in some famous (dare I say canonical) bike blogs that I read regularly, with a bunch of others that I hadn't come across before. I also wanted to get a good mix of mountain bikers, bike commuters, hipsters, advocates, roadies and randos- and I think I did fairly well in that regard. The cycling diversity that I found throughout the country was downright American and reinforced what a powerful and unlimited tool for fun, utility and community the bicycle is. Without further delay:

Both of the blogs you chose from Minnesota are from Duluth. Seems like you should add one from the metropolitan center of Minnesota.
Jason! This is so great. Would you mind if I copied it on my bike blog (www.orlandosentinel.com/chaingang)? Will definitely credit you and give site your blog. There’s so many people here who are from other states that it would give them a little piece of home.
Mary Shanklin
Fair enough Sveden, your mpls/doesbike blog seems like a logical candidate so I’ve made the change.
Mary, thanks for stopping by. I’m glad you liked this post. As I mentioned in the email I sent to you I would prefer that anyone who wants to blog about this post excerpt part of my explanation and link back to this post for the full list rather than copying it as a whole.
amazing post jason.
Nice! Very cool resource. And thanks for the mention.
cool!
It’s early in the morning (for me), but did you miss out Louisiana, or is my brain just not awake enough to find it?
Wow, impressive. It must have taken a bit of work.
I’m really honored that you selected my blog to name among two in Oklahoma. Thank you! I’m also honored to be on the same list as the legend, Cycle Dog.
I appreciate it!
As possibly the earliest American Bikeblog (Jan. 2003), and being beat to the punch only by a British Blogm by a mere 1 month, I am extremely honored that you chose me to help represent California.
Your list has done us all a great service!
And yes, Jacque, as one who has devoted some effort to putting together the most comprehensive list of resources found in the sidebar of probably “took a bit of work.”
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! ;-D
I will be doing a post, exerpting your explanation, and will then add a link you post to the blogroll under the title you use for your post so it will be the 1st link in the list. ;-D
Heather, you’re right. I’ll have to track those Louisiana ones down and add them.
Jacque, I’ve been working on this project off and on for a couple weeks.
Kiril, thanks for the kind words and linking to me on your blog too!
Jason, no problem!
How come our blog (WordPress) didn’t make it on this list for Georgia? http://www.mtobikes.com
Carl, for this particular project I limited myself to two bike blogs per state and I didn’t actually come across your blog during my limited research of Georgia. Lots of worthy bike blogs didn’t make this list, but you and others are certainly welcome to link to your bike blogs here in the comments.
If you do a post about Indian bike ride blogs, please don’t forget our site. Thanks.
Jason, you’ve taken it to the next level. Killer post.
On a whole ‘nother subject, what’s going on with your consecutive days riding streak?
Pat, today will be 115 days in a row once I get a ride in. As of yesterday I’ve ridden 1962.4 km during the streak for an average of 17 km (slightly more than 10 miles) a day.
As the writer of Cycling in Wichita, I wanted to write and thank you for honoring my not-quite-two-month-old blog by placing it on your list. I’ll be pleased to send people your way, and I’m looking forward to visiting these blogs you’ve linked to here.
Hey, thanks for adding my site. I didn’t know I was relevant enough to make a list!!
Good stuff, now I have like 199 other sites to peruse.
Very impressive list … and thanks for the link!
Good list. Here is one more for Texas. http://www.Texbiker.net

What an awesome list (helps I am on there!) Thanks for all the great links.

Very cool list, thanks for including me. There are a lot of great bicycle blogs in Minnesota, so I’m honored to be picked.
Awesome list! Even if ya did slight me…
(*Cough*DC*Cough*)
Thanks, Arleigh. And thanks for all the quality work you’ve done over at Blue Collar Mountain Biking.
Doug, you’re welcome and thanks for being one of my winter snow biking inspirations.
Thanks Ray! I contemplated throwing DC in there (and your blog of course), but decided to stick with a nice round 100 this time around.
Jason – Awesome job; I especially like the state bicycling pics! I’m wondering, are you planning on doing a blogroll or centralized RSS feed listing for the blogs?
Thanks Cyclonecross. I think you’re the first person that specifically commented on the signs. They took a while to put together because I was trying to make color (and occasionally design) choices based on the corresponding state flags. I had a first pass and then I went back through and tried to make sure nobody ended up with a ridiculous color scheme- at one point my Ohio sign had what looked like a clown bike!
As to your question, I have a few ideas related to taking things a little further with gathering and publicizing all these bike blogs, but no specific plans to do anything yet.
Hey thanks for link.
Tom from Tennessee
Cool. If only the real Senate rode their bikes this much…
Wow, you put those flags together yourself? Those are very cool! Nice work!
And thanks for the mention!
This is Jamie, from Bike Commuting in Columbus. Thanks for the link, and great job with the list!
Jill, thanks for stopping by- your blog is one of my favorites! I will definitely be drawing on you for inspiration to keep riding once the snow starts flying here in Spokane.
Jamie, you’re welcome. I’m glad I came across your blog.
Thanks for choosing the Snack to represent CT. While I don’t fancy myself as a hipster, nor a roadie, I do have a few of the other styles covered! I will link your site to mine and probably do a post about the honor, as well.
Thanks again
Mark
Thanks for this great resource. I’m always interested in exploring what others are doing and this gives us a mother lode to mine.
Hello from CT and the BeatBikeBlog, good to see so many good sites representing our bicycling brothers and sisters! Keep up the good work everyone, can’t wait to check out all of your sites!

Great post! I amount honored that my blog was one of the two chosen to represent South Carolina.
Great Post. I think you should do a world bike blog index, 2 from each country…there’s a challenge.

Thanks for the shout! Keep up the good work!
DrK, something like your suggestion has crossed my mind actually, but you’re right about it being pretty challenging.
Love your Blog!!! Thank you for the link to http://www.dukecitybmx.org! I will post a link from our blog to yours, great general bike lover stuff! Keep it Going! Ride Hard!
Rather late to the ball — I tend to write more than I surf. Thanks for adding me to your rather interesting list of bike blogs. It’s an honor and I hope you enjoy it.
Happy riding –Beth
